"The Vision of Health - Diagnosis and Future. Medical Foresight"

 

On 3rd October, 2017, the Public Health Committee of Polish Academy of Sciences together with the Committee of Forecast arranged special session, which opened a one-day conference organized by the Termedia Publishing House at the Sheraton Hotel in Warsaw. One of the patrons of the session was international group of experts working in the FRESHER project under the HORIZON 2020 program (FoResight and Modeling for European Health Policy and Regulation). FRESHER aims to work out European perspective describing scenarios of growing health burdens such like: myocardial infraction, strokes, diabetes, neoplasms, respiratory diseases
The aim of the session was to summarize 3 years’ experience of FRESHER team which involve many international experts (including 5 experts from Poland). There were presented expected health challenges in Poland and the European Union in the next 10-20 years.

Plenary speech, as a stimulus for discussion was presented Prof. Archana Singh-Manoux - eminent European epidemiologist, deputy director of the French National Institutes of Health and Medical Research (INSERM) - one of the leaders in FRESHER project analysis. The session was also attended by Undersecretary of State in the Ministry of Health Zbigniew Król, Prof. Michał Kleiber – eminent Polish expert in Foresight analyzes, medical authorities in persons of Prof. Grzegorz Opolski and Prof. Wojciech Hanke and as well economists in persons Prof. Krzysztof Opolski and Marek Zuber.

Scientific Conference

 "Health promotion is the basis of public health. Health promotion for the elderly"

 

The conference took place on 8th September 2017 in the auditorium of the National Institute of Public Health - National Institute of Hygiene in Warsaw.
The challenge of an ageing population in Poland and in other Central and Eastern European countries require development of priorities for the implementation  in the region strategies from the field of active and healthy aging. The main aim of the conference was to identify ways to strengthen health promotion addressed to the elderly people. There were also presented results of researches and examples of best practices from area of health promotion for older population in European countries. Presentations were summarizing the project which was conducted in years 2015-2017 by Medical College of Jagiellonian University in Krakow. Project was funded by EU 2nd Health Programme.
The conference was organized by the National Institute of Public Health - the National Institute of Hygiene and Medical College of Jagiellonian University in cooperation with Public Health Committee of the Polish Academy of Sciences.

Invitation for the conference "Innovation in Health Care"

 

The Public Health Committee of the Polish Academy of Sciences is a partner of the conference "Innovations in Health Care" organized by the Medical Center of Undergraduates Training of Warsaw Medical University and the National Center for Research and Development (NCRD), STRATEGMED Steering Committee.
The conference will take place on 28th September 2017 from 10 am till 3:30 pm in the auditorium of the Warsaw Medical University, Teaching Center, ul. Żwirki i Wigury 61.
The purpose of this meeting is to present and discuss modern solutions that will promote scientific, technological and organizational progress in health-related institutions. There will be presented also important projects of STRATEGMED and other interesting solutions. The technology partner of the conference will be Ricoh, which will present state-of-the-art 3D printing solutions using stem cells, hospital management systems, and healthcare. An important element of the meeting will be presentation of data security systems in health care on the example of such solutions implemented by Ricoh in Spain. The will finish with panel discussion with outstanding Polish and foreign guests.
We anticipate patronage, partnership and involvement of relevant institutions such as Minister of Science and Higher Education and Minister of Health, representatives of Scientific Council of the Minister of Health, Director of NCRD, representatives of "Teraz Polska" foundation , and other non-governmental organizations.

Lecture of the Year 2017: “How to improve health of Pole?

Heart failure epidemic – are we bound to fail?”

 

On 3rd July 2017, the Public Health Committee of the Polish Academy of Sciences (PAS) organized fifth time conference for from the cycle “How to improve the health of Poles? The Lecture of the Year” This prestigious conference is addressed to decision-makers and public opinion leaders. Conference was also within framework of statutory activity of Polish Academy of Science aimed on dissemination of science and knowledge) According to the adopted assumption, the main recipients of the conference were politicians and journalists. The main partners of this year's conference were: the Polish Cardiac Society (PCS) and the National Institute of Public Health - National Institute of Hygiene (NIPH-NIH).

This year, the leading theme of the conference was the heart failure (HF) epidemic, which has become a major health problem for Poles. It is the effect of aging society and the paradoxical progression of acute cardiac conditions such as myocardial infarction. Inadequate prevention and the current organizational model of care for patients cause a very large number of rehospitalizations and thus an increase in the cost of treatment. A similar problem affects majority of European countries. During the conference, experts from PAS, NIPH-NIH and PCS presented proposals for new solutions, including equal access to prevention and therapy for patients with heart failure.

The conference was opened by prof. Witold Rużyłło - Dean of the 5th Department of Medical Sciences, Polish Academy of Sciences and prof. Michał Kleiber - Chairman of Forecast Committee of Polish academy of Sciences.

In the first part of the meeting Prof. Katarzyna Stoś, representing the Institute of Food and Nutrition, presented a lecture entitled : "Labeling nutritional value of food products - mandatory and voluntary information systems". Mr. Dariusz Poznański discussed the issue of nutritional education and promotion in National Health Program 2016-2020.

In the second part of the meeting was performed workshop on changes in the health situation and its determinants in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) till 2050. The organizers of the workshop were Silesian Heart Diseases Center in Zabrze - Polish project leader of FRESHER project and NIZP-PZH. During the workshop there were discussed the results of the FRESHER and worked out within project preliminary scenarios for the European health situation, followed by discussions on changes in the health conditions in the CEE region.

The third part of the meeting concerned the development of the public health strategy in Poland. Dr Paulina Karwowska from the WHO Office in Poland delivered presentation "Organization of public health services in Europe". After this lecture Dr Michał Brzeziński from the Medical University of Gdańsk presented the results of the latest report of Polish Supreme Chamber of Control in the presentation "Health prophylaxis in the health care system".

 

Heart failure – what changes in the system are needed in Poland

 

On 12th June was held a second workshop in the Polish Cardiac Society's headquarters in preparation for the conference at the Royal Castle in Warsaw, scheduled for 3 July 2017. The meeting of the best Polish cardiology experts was an opportunity to exchange views and discussions on the current situation and future for the care of heart failure patients in Poland including possibility of preventing this serious clinical syndrome.

 

Heart failure - essence of the problem

 

On 21st April 2017 Public Health Committee together with National Institute of Public Health - National Institute of Hygiene and Polish Cardiac Society prepared the first of two workshops on problem of heart failure. The best Polish cardiology experts and representatives of the Polish Government participated in the meeting to debate the development of solutions for the dissemination of knowledge about heart failure among Polish society. The meeting was chaired by Prof. Tomasz Zdrojewski and Dr. Krzysztof Chlebus. Workshop was a preparation for main conference scheduled for 3rd July 2017.

Heart failure affects about 1 million adult Polish people, and according to experts’ estimates, this number will increase due to aging of population.

7th plenary meeting of the Public Health Commitee

 

The meeting was held on April 20th in the Palace of Culture and Science in Warsaw. The first session summarized the participation of the Public Health Committee in the conference organized by Scientific Council of the Minister of Health and Warsaw Medical University on impact of air pollution on the health situation of Poland. Dr Krzysztof Skotak from National Institute of Public Health - National Institute of Hygiene in Warsaw presented plenary lecture entitled "Quality of atmospheric air - specificity and threat for health in Poland". The panel discussion was attended by Prof. Wojciech Hanke, Prof. Bogdan Wojtyniak, Prof. Boleslaw Samoliński and Prof. Tomasz Zdrojewski.

The second part of the meeting summarized current state of implementation of the National Health Program 2016-2020. Dariusz Poznański, Deputy Director of the Department of Public Health in the Ministry of Health, outlined the issue. Conference “National Health Program 2016-2020"

 

On 8th March 2017 Senate of the Republic hosted the Conference of the Public Health School of the of Centre of Postgraduate Medical Education (CPME) under title “National Health Program 2016-2020". The conference was organized on the occasion of the 45th anniversary of School of Public Health in CPME. The sessions were chaired by Senator Waldemar Kraska. Conference was also occasion to bring together over 100 people, including public health experts, politicians, medical doctors and students. The Public Health Committee at the Conference was represented by: Prof. Tomasz Zdrojewski - Chairman of the Committee, Prof. Miroslaw Wysocki and Prof. Bogdan Wojtyniak.

The main discussions were focusing problems how to make lifestyle of Poles more healthy in the context of National Health Programme which is the most vital public health policy document in Poland.

Seminar “Air Pollution and Civilization Diseases”

 

On 28th February 2017 in the Main Library of Medical University of Warsaw was held seminar under title "Air Pollution and Civilization Diseases". Conference was organized by the Department of Environmental Hazards Prevention and Allergology of the Medical University of Warsaw together with the Public Health Committee of the Polish Academy of Sciences and Students Association “Health Managers”.

Seminar was a response to the commonly reported problem of bad air quality in Poland and its impact on human health. During the Seminar there were discussed issues related to the impact of air pollution on environment and health.

The following conclusions were achieved in discussion:

  • There is a need of changes in legal regulations related to fuels and heating equipment allowances
  • Creating appropriate financial tools to support the replacement of heating equipment for less emission
  • Implementation of effective control mechanisms in the field of waste incineration in households
  • Establishment of measures aimed at reducing emissions from road transport (restrictions and incentives);
  • Intensify efforts to more precisely evaluate the impact of pollution on human health

Emergency session of the Scientific Council by Minister of Health

 

On 9th February 2017 held an emergency meeting of the Scientific Council by Ministry of Health dedicated the problems of the impact of air pollution on health.

The conference was arranged together with the Public health Committee of the Polish Academy of Sciences and Ministry of Health. Session was prepared and coordinated by experts of the Public Health Committee of the Polish Academy of Sciences and experts from National Institute of Public Health-National Institute of Hygiene: Prof. Tomasz Zdrojewski, Prof. Wojciech Hanke, Prof. Bogdan Wojtyniak and Dr. Krzysztof Skotak.

In this extraordinary meeting also took a part Minister of Health Konstanty Radziwill.

 

 

Prof. Maciej Demel passed away

                                                              

Professor Maciej Demel died at the age of 94 on 27th January 2017. He was an outstanding thinker and scientist, who was combining the science of physical culture, health sciences, pedagogy and history of science. Maciej Demel was also the most prominent historian of hygiene movement in Poland.

The role of independent institutions and research centers

Are the circles of the public interested in alternative products to cigarettes? Do researches on them may be relevant for policy makers and practitioners in the area of tobacco policy ? The answers to these questions, participants sought further debate organized by the Institute of Occupational Medicine in Łódź and Institute of Lukasiewicz. The discussion was opened by Prof. Stanislaw Czuczwar, vice president of the Polish Academy of Sciences which was a partner in the debate.

Public Health Committee on conference organized by Rynek Zdrowia journal

 

On 26th October 2016 the Public Health Committee was represented by Prof. Tomasz Zdrojewski on 12th Health Market Forum in the session “Health policy - can we play as a team ?” . During the discussion, Prof. Zdrojewski positively assessed the Act on public health, the National Health Programme and financing of activities in the area of prevention and health promotion. He stressed that according to WHO by 2025 Poland needs to reduce premature mortality from lifestyle diseases by 25%. (Global Action Plan for the Prevention and Control of NCDs 2013-2020)

Meeting with Dr. João Breda from the WHO Regional Office for Europe

 

On 26th October 2016 in the headquarters of the 5th Department of Medical Sciences of Polish Academy of Sciences held a meeting of representatives of the Public health Committee with Dr. Joao Breda from the Regional Office of the World Health Organization for Europe (WHO EURO). 100th birthday anniversary of Prof. Jan Karol Kostrzewski

 

On 14th June 2016 National Institute of Public Health – National Institute of Hygiene arranged jubilee dedicated Prof. Jan Karol Kostrzewski. Conference was also organized under auspices of the Public Health Committee of the Polish Academy of Sciences.

Prof. Jan Karol Kostrzewski was eminent Polish epidemiologist and he is also one of the fathers of noncommunicable diseases epidemiology in Poland.

Public Health Committee supports Polish edition of EU Campaign: Healthy Workplaces for All Ages

 

On 18th May 2061 in laboratories TECH-SAFE-BIO of Central Institute for Labour Protection was held international conference entitled: "Sustainable Living Professional at any age." Conference has launched Polish edition of European information campaign Healthy Workplaces for All Ages which is also supported by Committee of Public Health of Polish Academy of Sciences.

Publication of Public Health Committee members

 

In the recent issue of The Lancet (April 6, 2016.) there was released the publication: “Worldwide trends in diabetes since 1980: a pooled analysis of 751 population-based studies with 4 .4 million participants”. There are three members of our Committee among the authors of the paper: Prof. Wojciech Drygas, Prof. Tomasz Zdrojewski and Prof. Bogdan Wojtyniak.

On 30th March 2016 held the fourth plenary meeting of the Public Health Committee of Polish Academy of Sciences The main topic of session was funding researches in the field of public health.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

The meeting of the Public Health Parliamentary Team

 

On 16th March 2016 was organized meeting of Public Health Parliamentary Team which was chaired by its deputy Beata Małecka-Libera MP. In the meeting attended experts from various fields related to public health. The aim of the conference was to identify priority issues which should be the subject of the Team work. From the Public Health Committee there were delegated: Prof. Barbara Woynarowska, Prof. Bogdan Wojtyniak, Prof. Miroslaw Wysocki and Prof. Adam Fronczak. Beata Małecka-Libera recognized as a priorities: health education, occupational medicine and diet supplements.

 

 

Conference: "Health behaviors Polish youth against their peers from 42 countries"

 

On 15th March 2016 during the conference organized by the Institute of Mother and Child, WHO and the Ministry of Health were presented the latest results of the international HBSC report 2013-2014 "Growing up unequal: gender and socioeconomic differences in young people's health and well-being." The official announcement of the report took place on the same day in Brussels. Conference panel discussion was attended by m.in.: Minister Jaroslaw Pinkas (Secretary of State in the Ministry of Health), Prof. Barbara Woynarowska, Prof. Bogdan Wojtyniak.

Presentation of the report "Prevalence of diabetes in Poland"

 

On 9th March 2016 during a press breakfast together with health journalists, experts from Public Health Committee presented the report which reveals the latest data on the prevalence of diabetes in Poland. The report shows that in 2013 total number of people with diabetes was 2.73 million. The highest morbidity is observed in slaskie voivodship (6.5% of the population), lodzkie (6.4%), opolskie (6.2%) and dolnoslaslaskie (6%). The lowest diabetes prevelance is characteristic for podkarpackie (4.6%) and podlaskie (4.8%). Diseaseis diagnosed more often by women (56%) than men (44%).

Conference in Parliament on Tobacco and Alcohol

How to implement policies dealing harmful stimulants ? Finding reply for this question was the topic of the conference which held in Polish Parliament on 23rd February 2016 under auspices of Lukasiewicz Institute. Other questions raised during panel discussions were regarding bans of smoking and limiting access to alcohol their effectiveness and effects. One of goals of conference was to indicate policy makers how to implement EU tobacco directive.

 

 

 

Health Challenges Congress

 

On 18th to 20th February 2016 in the International Congress Centre in Katowice was held Health Challenges Congress (HCC). Prof. Mirosław Wysocki head of National Institute of Public and member of Public Health Committee was invited by organizers for the opening session on defining health challenges for years 2016-2036. There were discussed issues related major threats to public health in the twenty-first century, the challenge of aging populations, NCDs prevention, health education and preventive medicine.
